1867 - 1954

He began his career as a theater actor and from 1908 he gained a foothold in the film business. In 1909 he joined the Edison Stock Company, later he also worked for the D.W. Griffith's stock company and the Biograph Company.

To his first movies belong "The Painter's Revenge" (08) and "After Many Years" (08) and in the next years there came movie after movie into being - only in 1909 he took part in 40 movies.
To his numerous movies till to the middle of the 10s belong "The Voice of the Violin" (09), "Confidence" (09), "Lucky Jim" (09), "The Suicide Club" (09), "A New Trick" (09), "The Attack on the Mill" (10), "The Winning of Miss Langdon" (10), "The Haunted Sentinel Tower" (11), "The Crusader" (11), "Under the Tropical Sun" (11), "The Sheriff" (11), "The Sign of the Three Labels" (11), "Next" (12), "The Silent Call" (12), "A Game of Chess" (12), "A Race to New York" (13), "Othello in Jonesville" (13), "Her First Performance" (13), "A Night at the Inn" (14), "Dock Potter's Wife" (14), "Olive and the Burglar" (15), "The Human Investment" (15) and "An Unwilling Thief" (15).

When the longer running movies achieved more acceptance opposite the short movies the number of movies in which Herbert Prior appeared diminished naturally in the second half of the 10s. 
To his well-known movies of those years belong "Miss George Washington" (16), "Great Expectations" (17), "The Poor Little Rich Girl" (17), "The Menace" (18), "A Burglar for a Night" (18), "That's Good" (19) and "Her Kingdom of Dreams" (19).

He was able to continue his film career in the 20s and he impersonated again many roles in popular movies.To these productions belong "Pollyanna" (20), "The House of Whispers" (20), "Made in Heaven" (21), "The Man from Downing Street" (22), "The Monster" (25), "The Better Man" (26), "The King of Kings" (27), "All at Sea" (29) and "The Duke Steps Out" (29).

The sound film brought Herbert Prior's career to an end, still he remained active in the film business till 1934 although he only got offered very small roles.
To his last movies belong "The Girl Said No" (30), "Laught and Get Rich" (31), "This Side of Heaven" (34), "Viva Villa!" (34) and "Student Tour" (34).

Herbert Prior was married with the actress Mabel Trunnelle and they often acted together in movies. They were the preeminent couple of Hollywood till they were displaces by Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks.
