. The actress Esther Ralston was born into an artistic interested family. Her parents and her four brothers were also actors. She made first experiances on stage before she played a small role in the movie "The Deep Purple" in 1915. After that it took five years till she appeared regular in movies. To her early successes belong "Huckleberry Finn" (20), "Whispering Devils" (30), "Remembrance" (22), "Oliver Twist" (22), "Blinky" (23), "The Prisoner" (23) and "The Heart Buster" (24). With her part in "Peter Pan" (24) he had one of her greatest successes, it followed the movies "Wolves of the North" (24), "The Lucky Devil" (25), "A Kiss for Cinderella" (25) and finally "The American Venus" (26), with which she became the darling of the American audience. After other successful entertainment movies like "The Blind Goddess" (26), "The Quarterback" (26), "Children of Divorce" (27), "Ten Modern Commandments" (27) and "Something Always Happens" (28) it was director Josef von Sternberg who engaged her for the first time for a dramatic role in the movie "The Case of Lena Smith" (29). Esther Ralston was convincing in this for her unusual role under his direction. Thanks to her earlier activity as a theater actress the transition to the talkies wasn't a problem for her. She took regular part in the movies "Lonely Wifves" (31), "Black Beauty" (33), "After the Ball" (33), "Romance in the Rain" (34), "Mister Dynamite" (35), "Reunion" (36) and "The Spy Ring" (38). After that she appeared only seldom in front of the camera, her last
works were "San Francisco Docks" (41), "Child of Divorce" (46) and the
TV serial "Our Five Daughters" (62).
