Der
Kameramann Charles Rosher arbeitete nach seiner Ausbildung zum Kameramann
bei David Horsley. Als dieser seine Firma von New Jersey in das sonnigere
Hollywood verlagerte, avancierte Charles Rosher zum ersten professionellen
Kameramann in Hollywood.
In den 10er Jahren führte Charles Rosher die Kamera für Filme
wie "The Indian Raiders" (12), "The Next Command" (14), "Gene of the Northland"
(15), "Blackbirds" (15), "The Blacklist" (16), "Anton the Terrible" (16),
"The Primrose Ring" (17), "The Little Princess" (17), "The Honor of His
House" (18), "Too Many Millions" (18), "Captain Kidd jr." (19) und "The
Hoodlum" (19).
Während dieser Zeit entwickelte Charles Rosher immer wieder neue
Techniken, die für die Herstellung von Filmen von Bedeutung waren.
In den 20er Jahren war er einer der begehrtesten Kameramänner und
Stars wie Mary Pickford gehörten zu seinen Stars, die er auf die Leinwand
bannte.
Zu seinen bekanntesten Arbeiten dieser Jahre zählen "Pollyanna"
(20), "Little Lord Fauntleroy" (21), "Tess of the Storm Country" (22),
"Rosita" (23), "Little Annie Rooney" (25), "Sunrise" (27), "Tempest" (28),
"Eternal Love" (29) und "Atlantik" (29).
Für "Sunrise" erhielt er zusammen mit Karl Stuss einen Oscar für
die beste Kamera und war damit der erste Kameramann der Filmgeschichte,
der diesen Preis in Empfang nehmen durfte.
Charles Rosher setzte seine Laufbahn in den 30er Jahren erfolgreich
fort. Er filmte u.a. die Produktionen "Two Worlds" (30), "Paid" (30), "Laughing
Sinners" (31), "This Modern Age" (31), "Two Against the World" (32), "Bed
of Roses" (33), "Moulin Rouge" (34), "Broadway Melody of 1936 (35), "Little
Lord Fauntleory" (36), "Hard to Get" (38), "Yes, My Darling Daughter" (39)
und "A Child Is Born" (39).
Die 40er Jahre boten ihm nochmals zahlreiche Aufträge für
das Kino, dazu gehören "Million Dollar Baby" (41), "Pierre of the
Plains" (42), "Kismet" (44), "Ziegfeld Follies" (45), "Yolanda and the
Thief" (45), "Song of the Thin Man" (47) und "Neptune's Daughter" (49).
Für "The Yearlling" (46) erhielt er nach zwei vorangegangenen
Oscar-Nominationen seinen zweiten Oscar zugesprochen.
Danach arbeitete Charles Rosher nur noch an wenigen weiteren Filmen,
ehe er sich ins Privatleben zurückzog.
Seine letzten Filme umfassen "Annie Get Your Gun" (50), "Scaramouche"
(52), "The Story of Three Loves" (53), "Kiss Me Kate" (53) und "Jupiter's
Darling" (55).
Zwei weitere Oscarnomantionen in den 50er Jahren rundeten seine imposante
Laufbahn ab.
Neben dem Film engagierte er sich als Mitbegründer der "American
Societoy of Cinematographers" für die Interessen der Kameramänner.
1974 verstarb Charles Rosher an den Folgen eines Sturzes in Lissabon,
Portugal.
Sein Sohn Charles Rosher jr. wurde ebenfalls Kameramann, seine Tochter
Joan Marsh wurde Schauspielerin.
