The actor Charles Ruggles appeared regularly in movies for 54 years
and impersonated countless support roles.
His family had to handle a big blown when his mother was killed at home
when she interposed between her husband and an armed burglar, his father
moved with his children to San Francisco where he grew up with his cousins.
Before Charles Ruggles became an actor he worked in the same pharmaceutical
company like his father. But the work was not was he really was looking
for and he left the company again.
Only one year later he made his stage debut in 1905 and remained true
to this profession till his death.
He continued his stage career and went to New York in 1914 in order
to play on Broadway.
In the same year he made his film debut with "The Patchwork Girl of
Oz" (14), it followed the silent movies "Hushing the Scandal" (15), "Peer
Gynt" (15), "The Heart Raider" (23) and "Gentlemen of the Press" (29).
When the sound film became finally accepted in the 30's his engagements
increased and with it his popularity.
To his well-known movies of those years belong "Queen High" (30), "Charley's
Aunt" (30), "The Smililng Lieutenant" (31), "This Reckless Age" (32), "Trouble
in Paradise" (32), "If I Had a Million" (32), "Madame Butterfly" (32),
"Alice in Wonderland" (33), "People Will Talk" (35), "The Preview Murder
Mystery" (36), "Hearts Divided" (36), "Bringing Up Baby" (38) as big game
hunter Major Applegate at Cary Grant's and Katherine Hepburn's side as
well as "Balalaika" (39).
The 40's and 50's turned out to by very busy as well and he impersonated
many support roles, whereas the 50's were dominated be television.
To his movies of those years belong "The Farmer's Daughter" (40), "Maryland"
(40), "The Invisible Woman" (40), "The Perfect Snob" (41), "A Stolen Life"
(46), "It Happened on Fifth Avenue" (47), an episode of the serial "The
United Steel Hour: Welcome Home" (54), an episode of the serial "The Life

His last cinematical works came in the 60's into being with "The Pleasure
of His Company" (61), "The Parent Trap" (61), "Ernestine" (62), "Son of
Flubber" (63), "I'd Rather Be Rich" (64), an episode of the serial "The
Munsters: Herman's Driving Test" (65), "Follow Me, Boys!" (66) and "Carousel"
(67).
His brother was the director Wesley Ruggles.
