The cinematographer John F. Seitz began his film career as a lab technician
at the age of 16, eight years later he became a cinematographer.
To his first silent movies belong "The Ranger of Lonesome Gulch" (16),
"Whose Wife?" (17), "The Bride's Silence" (17), "Beauty and the Rogue"
(18) and "The Westerners" (19).
He became an important cinematographer in the 20's and he captured many
great productions on the big screen. To his great movies of the 20's belong
Rex Ingram's "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" (21), "The Prisoner
of Zenda" (22), "Scaramouche" (23), "The Arab" (24), "Classmates" (24),
"The Magician" (26), "The Patsy" (28), "Outcast" (28), "The Divine Lady"
(29) - for which he was nominated for his first Oscar - and "A Most Immoral
Lady" (29).
Especially his dimmed lighting gave his work the special Seitz touch
for which he became famous.
John F. Seitz was also very busy in the sound film era and he took part
in many important movies ot that time.
To these movies belong "Road to Paradise" (30), "Kismet" (30), "Merely
Mary Ann" (31), "A Passport to Hell" (32), "Dangerously Yours" (33), "Marie
Galante" (34), "The Farmer Takes a Wife" (35), "Madame X" (37), "Young
Dr. Kildare" (38), "A Christmas Carol" (38), "The Adventures of Huckleberry
Finn" (39) and "Bad Little Angel" (39).
A huge success was his work for the Shirley-Temple movies, he worked
together with her for five movies - "Our Little Girl" (35), "Curly
Top" (35), "The Littlest Rebel" (35), "Captain January" (36) and "Poor
Little Rich Girl" (36).
In the 40's and 50's came his last big movies into being and he shot
movies for Preston Sturges and Billy Wilder among others. His works comprise
"Sullivan's Travels" (41), "Five Graves to Cairo" (43), "The Miracle of
Morgan's Creek" (44), "Double Indemnity" (44), "The Lost Weekend" (45),
"Calcutta" (47), "The Imperfect Lady" (47), "The Big Clock" (48), "The
Great Gatsby" (49), "Sunset Blvd." (50), "The Savage" (52), "Invaders from
Mars" (53), "Saskatchewan" (54), "A Cry in the Night" (56) and "The Man
in the Net" (59).
During this period he was nominated for six other Oscars, but he never
won one.
After his last movie "Guns of the Timberland" (60) he retired from the
film business as a cinematographer and concentrated to lab experiments.
He was the owner of a total of 18 licences for photographic inventions.
