1892 - 1946

Als Jugendlicher riss er von zu Hause aus und lebte als Herumziehender, ehe er den Schauspieler Edgar Kennedy traf, der ihn mit Mack Sennett bekannt machte.

So kam Slim Summverville zum Film und begann 1912 bei den legendären Keystone Kops. Dank seinem speziellen Erscheinungsbild etablierte er sich schon bald als Komödiant in zahlreichen Kurzfilmen, oft an der Seite bekannter Komödianten dieser Jahre, oft als eigener Hauptdarsteller.
Zu seinen ersten Filmen gehören "Hoffmeyer's Legacy" (12), "The Anglers" (14), "The Knockout" (14), "Fatty and the Heiress" (14), "The Angels" (14), "Tillie's Punctured Romance" (14), "The Plumber" (14), "Fatty's Magic Pants" (14), "Saved by the Wireless" (15), "The Home Breakers" (15), "Merely a Married Man" (15) und "Her Painted Hero" (15).
In diesen Jahren agierte er an der Seite zahlreicher legendärer Stummfilmkomiker wie Charley Chase, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, Charles Chaplin, Mabel Normand, Edgar Kennedy und Harold Lloyd.

In der 2. Hälfte der 10er Jahre folgten weitere zahlreiche Auftritte vor der Kamera, darunter "The Snow Cure" (16), "Cinders of Love" (16), "The Three Slims" (16), "Her Fame and Shame" (17), "A Bedroom Blunder" (17), "It Pays to Exercise" (18) und "Footballs and Frauds" (19).

In den 20er Jahren wirkte Slim Summerville weiterhin regelmässig vor der Kamera und er spielte in Produktionen wie "Pretty Lady" (20), "Mary's Little Lobster" (20), "The Rivals" (23), "Easy Work" (24), "Ship Ahoy!" (24), "William Tell" (24), "The Denver Dude" (27), "Red Suspenders" (27), "The Chinese Parrot" (27), "Riding for Fame" (28), "One Hysterical Night" (29) und "Tiger Rose" (29).

Gleichzeitig etablierte sich Slim Summerville als Regisseur von Kurzfilmen, dazu gehören "Hold Me Tight" (20), "Pardon Me" (21), "Hold the Line" (22), "Eskimo" (22), "The Ranch Romeo" (22), "The Artist" (23), "The Riding Master" (23), "The Very Bad Man" (24), "The Cry Baby" (24), "Back to Nature" (25), "The Perfect Lie" (26), "A Bedtime Story" (26), "Wanted a Bride" (26), "Meet the Husband" (27) und "A Run for His Money" (27).
Seine letzte Regiearbeit entstand mit "Who's the Boss" (30).

Stattdessen konzentrierte sich Slim Summerville im Tonfilm der 30er Jahre wieder vermehrt auf seine Karriere als Schauspieler und er konnte in den nächsten Jahren nebst komischen Rollen auch immer wieder in ernsten Filmen mitspielen und überzeugen.
Zu seinen bekanntesten Filmen dieser Jahre gehören "King of Jazz" (30), "All Quiet on the Western Front" (30), "The Spoilers" (30), "The Front Page" (31), "Parisian Gaities" (31), "Heaven on Earth" (31), "The Unexpected Father" (32), "Air Mail" (32), "Her First Mate" (33), "The Farmer Takes a Wife" (35), "Captain January" (36), "White Fang" (36), "Reunion" (36), "Rebecca on Sunnybrook Farm" (38), "Jesse James" (39) und "Charlie Chan in Reno" (39).

Seine letzten filmischen Arbeiten entstanden in den 40er Jahren und Slim Summerville konnte bis kurz vor seinem Tod vor der Kamera arbeiten.
Seine letzten Filme umfassen "Gold Gush Maisie" (40), "Western Union" (41), "Niagara Falls" (41), "The Valley of Vanishing Men" (42), "Bride by Mistake" (44), "Swing in the Saddle" (44) und "The Hoodlum Saint" (46).
