Tyler Bates begann seine musikalische Karriere um 1993, als er zusammen mit der Sängerin Lisa Papineau die Gruppe "Pet" gründete.
Gleichzeitig entstanden auch erste Kompositionen für den Film, darunter für "Blue Flame" (93), "Tammy and the T-Rex" (94), "Not Like Us" (95), "The Crow: City of Angels" (96), "The Last Time I Committed Suicide (97), "Alien Avengers" (97), "Denial" (98) und "Thicker Than Water" (99).

In den nächsten Jahren konzentrierte er sich ganz auf Film und Fernsehen und schrieb viele eindrückliche Soundtracks. 
Dazu gehören Filme wie "Get Carter" (00), "Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the Thirteenth" (00), "Wasted" (02), "Love and a Bullet" (02), "City of Ghosts" (02), "You Got Served" (04), "The Devil's Rejects" (05), "See No Evil" (06), "Grindhouse" (07), "Halloween" (07), "Doomsday" (08), die Serie "Californication" (07-08), "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (08), "The Haunted World of El Superbeasto" (09), "The Darkest Hour" (11) und "Conan the Barbarian" (11).

Als er 2004 für den Regisseur Zack Snyder für dessen Film "Dawn of the Dead" (04) erstmals die Musik schrieb, entstand daraus eine fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit und Tyler Bates hat seitdem fast alle nachfolgenden Filmprojekte von Zack Snyder vertont - darunter "300" (06) - deren Musik sich stark an Elliot Goldenthals "Titus" orientierte, "Watchmen" (09), "Sucker Punch" (11) und "Superman: Man of Steel" (12).

Weitere Regisseure, mit denen er regelmässig zusammenarbeitete, sind Rob Zombie, Stephen Kay und Neil Marshall.

Neben seiner Arbeit als Filmkomponist betätigte sich Tyler Bates auch als Musiker für die heavy Metal Band "Smash Alley".
