Der Filmkomponist Maurice K. Jerome spielte bereits zur
Highschool-Zeit als Pianist für Vaudeville Theater und begleitete
Stummfilme als Musiker in Kinosäälen.
1929 ging er nach
Hollywood, wo er bei Warner Brothers unter Vertrag genommen wurde. Für
das Filmstudio komponierte er in den kommenden 18 Jahren unzählige
Filmsongs, etliche Filmkompositionen und ebenso viele sogenannte Stock
Music.
Bereits ab 1928 erschienen erste Filmsongkompositionen
von ihm auf der grossen Leindwand, zu seinen ersten filmischen Arbeiten
zählen "The Larry Ceballos Revue" (28), "Evidence" (29), "The Show of
Shows" (29), "The Painted Angel" (29), "No, No, Nanette" (30), "The
Sultan's Jester" (30), "Second Coice" (30), "Modern Business" (30),
"Sing a Song" (32), "Gambling Lady" (34) und "Moonlight on the Prairie"
(35).
Ab 1934 schrieb M. K. Jerome auch ganze Filmkompositionen,
darunter für "The St. Louis Kid" (34), "Babbitt" (34), "The Right to
Live" (35), "A Night at the Ritz" (35), "Hot Money" (36), "Here Comes
Carter" (36), "Kid Galahad" (37), "Boy Meets Girl" (38) and "Women in
the Wind" (39).
Seine weitaus umfangreichere Tätigkeit beim Film blieb aber beim Schreiben von Filmsongs.
In
der 2. Hälfte der 30er Jahre entstanden filmische Arbeiten wie "Ceiling
Zero" (36), "King of the Islands" (36), "Mr. Dodd Takes the Air" (37),
"Prairie Thunder" (37), "The Prince and the Pauper" (37), "The Littlest
Diplomat" (37), "A Slight Case of Murder" (38), "Dust Be My Destiny"
(39) und "Kid Nightingale" (39).
Ein neues Betätigungsfeld
erhielt er ebenfalls in der zweiten Hälfte der 30er Jahre bei Warner
Brothers, als er für deren Trickfilme kompositorische Arbeiten beitrug.
Dazu gehören unter anderem "Porky's Road Race" (37) mit Schweinchen Dick und "Picador Porky" (37).
In den nächsten Jahren betätigte sich M.K. Jerome als Filmsongkomponist in den Bereichen Kurzfilm, Spielfilm und Trickfilm.
Zu
seinen Arbeiten der 40er Jahren zählen "Tear Gas Squad" (40), "Santa Fe
Trail" (40), "Minstrel Days" (41), "Casablanca" (42), "Yankee Doodle
Dandy" (42), "The Hard Way" (43), "Shine on Harvest Moon" (44), "San
Antonio" (45), "Nora Prentiss" (47), "Cheyenne" (47) und "Snow
Carnival" (49).
In den 50er Jahren entstanden seine letzten
filmischen Arbeiten mit "The Daughter of Rosie O'Grady" (50), "Goodbye,
My Fancy" (51) und "Miracle in the Rain" (56).
Für seine Musik zu "Hollywood Canteen" (44) und "San Antonio" (45) wurde er jeweils für einen Oscar nominiert.
Zu seinen bekanntesten Liedern gehören "Bright Eyes", "My Little Buckaroo", "The Old Apple Tree" und "It's Victory Day".
M. K. Jerome heiratete 1934 die Schauspielerin Norma Talmadge, die Ehe wurde noch im gleichen Jahr wieder geschieden.
