Der Schauspieler George Fawcett gehörte zu den meistbeschäftigten
Darstellern des Stummfilm, dessen Ausstrahlung das Publikum fesselte. Bereits
um die Jahrhundertwende gehörte er zu den grossen Theater-Darstellern
(sein Bühnendebüt feierte er 1888) in England und den USA und
stand auf einer Ebene mit den Barrymore-Brüdern.
Zu seinen Bühnenauftritten gehören u.a. "Ghosts" (03) und
"The Squaw Man" (05).
Bereits 55 Jahre alt, wurde er für den Film entdeckt, wo er schon
bald ein bevorzugter Darsteller des Regisseurs D.W. Griffith wurde. Unter
seiner Regie agierte er in "Intolerance" (16), "A Romance of Happy Valley"
(19), "True Heart Susie" (19), "Scarlet Days" (19), "The Greatest Question"
(19) und "Lady of the Pavements" (29).
Daneben entstanden unzählige weitere Stummfilme, darunter "The
Majesty of the Law" (15), "The Crisis" (16), "The Cinderella Man" (17),
"The Beloved Traitor" (18) und "The Fall of Babylon" (19).
Seine erfolgreichste Zeit folgte in den 20er Jahren, wo er schon bald
als der grosse alte Mann des Films die Gunst des Publikums an sich riss.
Zu seinen unzähligen Darstellungen dieser Jahre gehören die
Produktionen "Nobody" (21), "Hush Money" (21), "The Old Homestead" (22),
"Manslaughter" (22), "The Woman with Four Faces" (23), "The Breaking Point"
(24), "Her Love Story" (24), "The Verdict" (25), "The Waiter from the Ritz"
(26), "Out of the Storm" (26), "The Son of the Sheik" (26), "Flesh and
the Devil" (26) mit dem legendären Filmpaar Greta Garbo und John Gilbert,
"Tillie the Toiler" (27), "Love" (27) - wiederum mit Garbo und Gilbert,
"The Private Life of Helen of Troy" (27), "Tempest" (28), "The Wedding
March" (28) unter der Regie von Erich von Stroheim, "Innocents of Paris"
(29) und "The Great Divide" (29).
Mit dem Aufkommen des Tonfilms zog sich George Fawcett aus gesundheitlichen
Gründen schon bald vom Filmgeschäft zurück. Zu seinen letzten
filmischen Arbeiten gehören "Wild Company" (30), "The Drums of Jeopardy"
(31) und "Hello, Sister" (33).
