The actor Edward Everett Horton belongs to the greatest support actors
of the American film industry who especially with his performances in comedies
rallied a huge crowd of fans round him. With his aristocratic looks and
his behaviour which looked like a worried penguin, he was predestine for
this genre.
It all began in 1906 when he sang in a chorus and danced on Broadway.
Later he went to the theater which led to his engagement in the film industry.
His first movies "Too Much Business" (22) and "Ruggles of Red Gap"
(23) were financial successful productions and one became soon aware of
this new face on the screen.
Edward Everett Horton worked as a star in other silent movies like "Helen's
Babies" (24), "Marry Me" (25), "La Boheme" (26), "The Nutcracker" (26),
"The Terror" (28) and "The Hottentot" (29) - his last silent movie.
With the rise of the sound movie he became a very demanded support actor
who stand by many stars of all studios in Hollywood. To his early talkies
belong "The Front Page" (31), "Trouble in Paradise" (32), "Alice in Wonderland"
(33), "Design for Living" (33), "The Poor Rich" (34) and "The Merry Widow"
(34).
He owned his greatest popularity to the movies with Ginger Rogers and
Fred Astaire like in "The Gay Divorcee" (34), "Top Hat" (35) and "Shall
We Dance" (37).
Edward Everett Horton rounded off the 30's with movies like "Angel"
(37), "Let's Make a Million" (37), "Bluebeard's Eighth Wife" (38) and "Paris
Honeymoon" (39).
His creative power remained in the 40's. The audience had fond memories
of "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" (41), "Ziegfeld Girl" (41), "I Married an Angel"
(42), "Arsenic and Old Lace" (44), "Lady on a Train" (45), "Cinderella
Jones" (46) and "Her Husband's Affairs" (47).
Edward Everett Horton devoted more the the television industry in the
50's and expecially in the 60's and appeared in a whole string of serials.
Beside it he appeared on the big screen time and again, so in "The Story
of Mankind" (57), "Pocketful of Miracles" (61), "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad
World" (63) and "The Perils of Pauline" (67) - his last movie was "Cold
Turkey" (70).
