The actor John Stuart was one of the most popular actors of the 20's.
He made first acting experiences at the theater after World War I.
From 1920 he conquered the British schreen and filled the audience with
enthusiasm with movies like "Her Son" (20), "The Little Mother" (22), "The
Loves of Mary, Queen of Scots" (23), "Her Redemption" (24), "The Pleasure
Garden" (25), "Baddesley Manor: The Phantom Gambler" (26), "The Flight
Commander" (27) and "Mademoiselle Parley Voo" (28).
John Stuart also took part in some German movies in the 20's, among
them "Die Frauen zweier Junggesellen" (25), "Irrgarten der Leidenschaft"
(25) and "Venezianische Liebesabenteuer" (25).
The arising sound film didn't influence the career of John Stuart in
a negative way. Already his first talky "Kitty" (29) was a successful production.
He got more and more rewarding character roles in the 30's which demonstrated
his acting potential. To his well-known movies of the 30's belong "No Exit"
(30), "Eve's Fall" (30), "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (31), "Naughty
Cinderella" (33), "The Four Masked Men" (34), "The Black Abbot" (34), "Abdul
the Damned" (35) and "The Elder Brother" (37).
During the time of ware the role offers were falling off and he appeared
among others in "Ships with Wings" (41), "The Big Blockade" (42), "The
Missing Million" (42) and "Headline" (43).
The British post-war film offered him only small parts with few exceptions,
so in "The Ringer" (52), "Mantrap" (53), "Quatermass 2" (57), "The Revenge
of Frankenstein" (58), "The Mummy" (59), "Village of the Damned" (60) and
"The Scarlet Blade" (63).
He impersonated his last role in the movie "Superman" (78).
As a talented writer he published his autobiography in 1971 with the
title "Caught in the Act".
