Die Schauspielerin Viola Dana wurde als Virginia Flugrath in Brooklyn
geboren. Ihre Geschwister Edna Flugrath und Shirley Mason schlugen ebenfalls
eine Schauspielerkarriere ein.
Viola Dana fing als Statistin im Alter von 13 Jahren bei der Edison
Company an und gab ihr Filmdebüt als Schauspielerin 1912 mit "How
Father Accomplished His Work" (12). Es folgte ein weiterer kleiner Auftritt
in "The Lord and the Peasant" (12), danach wurde sie bereits als Hauptdarstellerin
engagiert, so in "Molly the Drummer Boy" (14) und "The Blind Fiddler" (14).
Mit ihrer Rolle in "Gladiola" (15) fand sie erstmals öffentliche
Anerkennung und festigte ihre Popularität mit der Hauptrolle in "The
Innocence of Ruth" (16).
1915 heiratete Viola Dana den Regisseur John H. Collins, der mit ihr
mehrere Filme drehte, so "On Dangerous Paths" (15), "The Cossack's Whip"
(16) und "Aladdin's Other Lamp" (17).
Doch die junge Liebe wurde abrupt zerstört, als John H. Collins
1918 an einer Grippeinfektion starb - er war gerade mal 28 Jahre alt.
Viola Dana ging zu Metro Pictures und wurde dort ein führender
Star. Sie pflegte auch gute Kontakte zu ihren Filmkollegen und zählte
Buster Keaton, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, John Gilbert
und Mabel Normand zu ihren Freunden.
In den 20er Jahren zählte Viola Dana zu den ganz grossen Stars
und unterhielt das Publikum mit Filmen wie "The Willow Tree" (20), "Blackmail"
(20), "Forteenth Lover" (22), "Glass Houses" (22), "In Search of Thrill"
(23), "The Heart of a Bandit" (24), "The Beauty Prize" (24), "Merton of
the Movies" (24), "Along Came Ruth" (24), "The Great Love" (25), "The Silent
Lover" (26), "That Certain Thing" (28) und "The Show of Shows" (29) - ihr
letzter Film.
Als das Filmgeschäft durch den Ton revolutioniert wurde, zog sich
Viola Dana ins Privatleben zurück.
