. The actor Charles Hawtrey was regarded as one of the most successful stage comedians of England. He began his career in 1881 and two years later he had his first success with the play "The Private Secretary". He led the Globe Theatre in London from 1884 to 1887, lager he also managed the Royal Comedy Theatre from 1887 to 1893 and from 1896 to 1898. Charles Hawtrey impersonated very different roles in countless productions in the next years and he got the nickname "The best liar of his time". Charles Hawtrey also had some appearances in front of the camera. He made his film debut in 1913 with "A Message from Mars", it followed the productions "Honeymoon for Three" (15) and "Masks and Faces" (18). One years before his death Charles Hawtrey was knighted by King GeorgeV in 1922 for his merit for the theater. Charles Hawtrey was married with the actress Elsie Petie. |
