. The cinematographer Philippe Agostini began his film career already in the middle of the 30's with movies like "Itto" (34), "Baccara" (35), "Aventure à Paris" (36), "Un carnet de bal" (37), "La tragédie impériale" (38) and "Le veau gras" (39). Philippe Agostini was soon regarded as a master of black-and-white movies and he worked together with the famous directors of that time. Among others he photographed the productions "Le jour se lève" (39) and "Les portes de la nuit" (46) for Marcel Carné and "Les anges du péché" (43) and "Les dames du Bois de Boulogne" (45) for Robert Bresson . He was over and over again called on for important movies. He worked with the camera for Claude Autant-Lara's "Sylvie et le fantôme" (45), Marcel Pagnol's "Topaze" (51), Max Ophüls' "Le plaisir: Le modèle" (52), Jules Dassin's "Du rififi chez les hommes" (55) und Sacha Guitry's "Si Paris nous était conté" (55). One of his last work with the camera was for Jacques-Yves Cousteau's documentary "Le monde du silence" (56). After that he changed to the direction field and he realised some movies
till the middle of the 70's, among them "Le naïf aux quarante enfants"
(58), "Le dialogue des Carmélites" (60), "Rencontres" (61), "La
petite fille à la recherche du printemps" (71) and the serial "L'âge
en fleur" (75).
Philippe Agostini was married with the actress Odette Joyeux verheiratet.
His sons Claude and Yves Agostini became also cinematographers.
