The director and producer Luc Besson belongs to the most important
personalities of the French film. Although he only realised few movies
as a director and was more often busy as a writer and producer, Luc Besson
is best remembered as a director by the audience - a characterstic which
underpins the presence of his work as a director.
Before his film career he earned his money as a dive instructor, a passion
he was given by his parents who were connected with the element water.
But after an accident he had to give up this profession and he dedicated
to the film.
After first little orders he was employed as a director assistant by
Gaumant in 1980 and he made valuable experiences. Only one year later he
founded his own production company and launched his impressive film career.
After his direction debut "L'avant dernier" (81) he was able to achieve
a first great success with his second movie "Le dernier combat - Der letzte
Kampf" (83).
Two years later followed his next movie as a director with "Subway"
(85), which was an unexpected box-office hit with Christopher Lambert and
Isabelle Adjani. This movie was a milestone in the French film history.
Luc Besson has chosen his topics very carefully in the next years and
therefore it lastet three years till he realised his next movie after "Subway".
But the waiting was worth it and he captured an unusual topic on the
silver screen which could profit from his former experiences.
With "Le grand bleu - Im Rausch der Tiefe" (88) he filled the critics
and the audience with enthuisasm and helped Jean
Reno - who already took part in two former movies of Luc Besson - to
the international breakthrough.
The cooperation of Luc Besson and Jean Reno continued successfully in
the movies "Nikita" (90) and "Léon" (94). Between these movies Luc
Besson shot the disappointing production "Atlantis" (91).
To Luc Besson's next works as a director belong "The Fifth Element"
(97) with Bruce Willis, "The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc" (99)
as well as "Angel-A" (05) and "Arthur et les Minimoys" (06).
Besides his activity as a director he also made a name as writer and
producer.
As a writer he wrote the scripts for movies like "Kamikaze" (86), "Taxi"
(98), "Kiss of the Dragon" (01), "Wasabi" (01), "Fanfan la tulipe" (03),
"Danny the Dog" (05) and "Bandidas" (06).
His works as a producer comprise "Ne quittez pas" (84), "Les mamies"
(92), "Exit" (00), "Blanche" (02), "Les rivières pourpres II - Les
anges de l'apocalypse" (04), "Imposture" (05), "Avril" (06) and "L'invité"
(07).
Luc Besson was among others married with the actresses Anne Parillaud
and Milla Jovovich.
