The cinematographer Henri Decae influenced the French film from the
50's to the 70's with his impressive pictures and he belonged to the best
of his line. To his regular directors belonged Claude
Chabrol, Louis Malle and François
Truffaut.
He made his first contact with the film business as a cutter before
he worked as a cinematographer for the French army during World War II
where he realised documentaries.
His first motion picture as a cinematographer was "Le silence de la
Mer" (47)
He rose to one of the most demanded cinematographers in the 50's who
was called on for important productions.
To his well-known movies belong "Au coeur de la Casbah" (52), "Les
amants (58), "Les cousins" (59), "Plein soleil" (60), "Le jour et l'heure"
(63), "La tulipe noire" (64), "La ronde" (64), "Viva Maria!" (64) and "Hotel
Paradiso" (66).
Henri Decae also worked for international movies from the end of the
60's and was soon esteemed for his work beyond the border.
He run among others the camera for "The Night of the Generals" (67),
"The Comedians" (67), "Le samouraï" (67), "Le clan des Siciliens"
(69), "The Light at the Edge of the World" (71), "Two People" (73), "Operation
Daybreak" (76), "Bobby Deerfield" (77), "The Boys from Brazil" (78) and
"Flic ou voyou" (79).
To his last cinematical works he was able to practise till old age belong
"The Island" (80), "Le professionnel" (81), "Exposed" (83) and "Riviera"
(87).
