. The actor and director Léon Mathot belonged to the pioneers of the French film whose activity as a film actor can be backdated till 1906. After his film debut "La course à la perruque" (06) he managed the breakthrough as an actor in the 10s and was successful with movies like "Gontran aime les animaux" (11), "Les rivaux d'Arnheim" (12), "Le pont fatal" (14), "Le Moulin tragique" (16), "Les dames de Croix-Mort" (17), "Volonté" (17), "Le comte de Monte Cristo" (18) als Edmond Dantès, "La maison d'argile" (18) and "Travail" (19). In the 20s followed numerous other popular movies who assured his position as a movie star. To these movies belong "L'ami Fritz" (20), "Blanchette" (21), "Mon oncle Benjamin" (23), "Coeur fidèle" (23), "L'auberge rouge" (23), "Les cinquante ans de Don Juan" (24), "La blessure" (25), "Der Maler und sein Modell" (25), "Rue de la paix" (26), "Dans l'ombre du harem" (28) and "L'instinct" (29). With the advent of the sound film his career as an actor came to an end. His last appearances in front of the camera were for "Le mystère de la villa rose" (30), "Passeport 13.444" (31) and "Deuxième bureau contre kommandantur" (39). Already since 1927 Léon Mathot was also busy as a director and he was able to remain active in the film business till to the 50s as a director. His first movies as a director were "Celle qui domine" (27), "L'instinct" (29) and "L'appassionata" (29). In the 30s he realised many other productions as a director like "Bouboule's Gang" (31), "Embrassez-moi" (32), "La mascotte" (35), "Les loups entre eux" (36), "Le révolté" (38) and "Le bois sacré" (39). To his last directed movies belong "Le collier de chanvre" (40), "L'homme sans nom" (43), "La route du bagne" (45), "La dernière chevauchée" (48), "La danseuse de Marrakech" (49) and "Mon gosse de père" (53).
