The actor Hansjoachim Büttner came into contact with the life of an artist at an early age, as his father Max Büttner was a chamber singer.

During his studies in art history and philosophy, Hansjoachim Büttner already took his first acting lessons with the well-known theater actor Ferdinand Gregori.
At the age of 20 he made his stage debut at the Landestheater zu Schwerin. This was followed by engagements in Bonn, Vienna, Darmstadt, Bremen and Berlin, where he appeared on stage from 1931.

Already one year later he made his film debut with "Der weisse Dämon" (32) and in the next years followed numerous other supporting roles in productions like "Ich will Dich Liebe lehren" (33), "Ein gewisser Herr Gran" (33), "Hitlerjunge Quex" (33), "Gold" (34), "Stützen der Gesellschaft" (35), "Annemarie" (36), "Zu neuen Ufern" (37) and "Kriminalkommissar Eyck" (40).

After the end of World War 2 he continued both his stage and film career.
In East Germany, he acted in DEFA films, including "Das verurteilte Dorf" (52), "Das Fräulein von Scuderi" (55), "Der Richter von Zalamea" (56), "Thomas Müntzer" (56), "Reifender Sommer" (59) and "Maria Stuart" (59).

His last cinematographic works include "The Black Galley" (62), "The Heinitzer" (65), "The Best Years" (65), the series "Secret Code B 13" (67) and "KLK an PTX - The Red Chapel" (71).
