. The actor Gustav Diessl attended courses in painting and art where he already demonstrated his artistic ambitions. In 1916 he played for the first time as an extra at different stages in Vienna. But before he could launch his acting career he called up during World War I and was taken prisoner for one year. After the war he startet a training as a stage designer in 1919 but abandoned and decided to take the profession of an actor. He played for a touring company for time being, in 1921 followed the first fixed engagement at the "Neue Wiener Bühne". Also in 1921 he made his film debut in "Im Banne der Kralle" on recommendation of the director G.W. Pabst, with whom he often worked together in the following years. It followed the movies "Vineta" (23), "Ssanin" (24) and "Die Rache der Pharaonen" (24). He made his real breakthrough with "Die weisse Hölle vom Piz Palü" (29), the first of further "mountain movies". Likewise in the silent movie era he took part in the successful productions "Die Büchse der Pandora" (29) and "Die Drei um Edith" (29). In the 30's followed movies like "Westfront 1918" (30), "Hans in allen Gassen" (30), "Menschen hinter Gittern" (31), "Die Herrin von Atlantis" (32), "Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse" (33), "S.O.S. Eisberg" (33), "Der Tiger von Eschnapur" (37), "Das indische Grabmal" (37) and "Ich bin Sebastian Ott" (39). Gustav Diessl could also maintain his career in the 40's. He played in "Komödianten" (41), "Menschen im Sturm" (41), "Kolberg" (44) and "Der Prozess" (48) before he died short after "Der Prozess". Gustav Diessl was married among others with the actress and singer Maria
Cebotari (1910-1949).
