The director E. W. Emo (also Emerich Walter Emo) was born as Emerich Josef Wojtek in Austria.
Before he gained a foothold in the film business he served as a young man for the army during World War I. After the war he first worked as an extra and he made first cinematical experiences in different positions behind the camera. He made his way to a director assistant and to his movies in this function belong "Der Balletterzherzog" (26), "Der König der Mittelstürmer" (27) und "Die 3 Niemandskinder" (27).

When he realised his first movie as a director in 1928 with "Flitterwochen"(28) he had a huge success strightaway and he underlined his ambition to become a successfull director.

After other silent movies like "Spelunke" (29) and "Zwischen vierzehn und siebzehn" (29) E. W. Emo became one of the most successful Austrian movie directors of the 30s and he shot many popular entertainment movies. He often worked together with the actors Paul Hörbiger, Theo Lingen and especially Hans Moser and he was essentially involved in the growing popularity of them. Other regular casted actors were Heinz Rühmann and Wolf Albach-Retty.
To his well-known movies of the 30s belong "Der Storch streikt" (31), "Das Testament des Cornelius Gulden" (32), "Der Herr ohne Wohnung" (34), "Der Himmel auf Erden" (35), "Familie Schimek" (35), "Der Mann, von dem man spricht" (37), "Die Austernlilli" (37), "13 Stühle" (38) and "Anton der Letzte" (39).
Together with Karl Künzel and Paul Hörbiger he founded the production company Algefa-Film.

E. W. Emo was able to continue his film career during World War II and he shot movies like "Der liebe Augustin" (40), "Wien 1910" (43), "Reisebekanntschaft" (43) and "Schwarz auf weiss" (43).

His film career came slowly to the end after the war. In the 50s he directed the movies "Der Theodor im Fussballtor" (50), "Es schlägt 13" (50), "Hilfe, ich bin unsichtbar" (51), "Fräulein Casanova" (53), "Husarenmanöver" (56), "Ober zahlen" (57) and "Wenn die Bombe platzt" (58).

Afterwards he retired from the film business.

E. W. Emo was married with the actress Anita Dorris. His daughter Maria Emo became an actress as well.
