. The production designer Artur Günther began his professional career on a construction site where he broadened his mechanical skills in the practice. He already got in touch with the new medium film in 1912. He began as a painter of sceneries. Finally he was able to use his former gained abilities as a set decorator and production designer. The production designer Robert A. Dietrich familiarized him with this area of work and from 1917 Artur Günther became a production designer himself. To his first movies belong "Memoiren der Tragödin Thamar" (17), "Ahasver" (17), "Irrwege der Liebe" (18), "Der Herr der Welt" (18), "Der fliegende Holländer" (18), "Alraune, die Henkerstochter, genannt die rote Hanne" (18) and "Liebe, Hass und Geld" (19). He became established as a production designer in the 20s and he was responsible for silent movies like "Das Grauen" (20), "Die Augen der Welt" (20), "Moral" (20), "Opfer der Liebe" (21), "Die Hexe" (21), "Der Mann im Sattel" (25), "Fedora" (26), "Die versunkene Flotte" (26), "Tragödie einer Ehe" (27) and "Das deutsche Lied" (28). He reached the height of his career in the 30s and he took part in many important productions who also attracted film historical interest. To his movies of those years belong "Das verlorene Paradies" (1), "Die unsichtbare Front" (33), "Viktor und Viktoria" (33), "Ein idealer Gatte" (35), "Der Mann mit der Pranke" (35), "Der Biberpelz" (37), "Kleiner Mann - ganz gross!" (38), "Narren im Schnee" (38) and "Menschen vom Varieté" (39). He was able to continue his career during World War II and was the art director for "Die keusche Geliebte" (40), "Friedemann Bach" (41), "Dr. Crippen an Bord" (42) and "Der ewige Klang" (43). After World War II he joined the newly founded DEFA for which he was engaged for many movies again. He remained active as a production designer till to the construction of the wall in Berlin. Afterwards he retired from the film business. To his well-known postwar movies belong "Die Brücke" (49), "Freitag, er 13." (49), "Das kleine und das grosse Glück" (53), "Die Geschichte vom kleinen Muck" (53), "Der Richter von Zalamea" (56), "Emilia Galotti" (58), "Claudia" (59), "Der Ermordete greift ein" (61) and "Der Schwur des Soldaten Pooley" (63).
