Hugo Hirsch

The film and operetta composer Hugo Hirsch studied music in Stettin and later in Berlin by Johannes Doebber.

The emphasis was on serious music but his passion was for hit songs and light music.

His first operettas were already performed at the beginning of the 10s and he achieved the height of his popularity in the 20s with several golden oldies.
Hit songs like "Wer wird denn weinen, wenn man auseinander geht" made him very popular.

To his well-known works belong "Die tolle Lola" (19), "Der Fürst von Pappenheim" (23), "Der blonde Traum" (25) and "Fräulein Mama" (28).

His musical works were also used for movies and some of his operettas were filmed. Beside it he also wrote some filmmusic.
To his cinematical works belong "Seine schwache Stunde" (16), "Lumpen und Seide" (25), "Der Fürst von Pappenheim" (27), "Die tolle Lola" (27), "Wer wird denn weinen, wenn man auseinandergeht" (29), "Drei von der Stempelstelle" (32), "Der Fürst von Pappenheim" (52) and "Die tolle Lola" (54).

As an artist with Jewish roots his career in Germany ended in 1933. He first went to London, later to Belgium and France.

He returned to Germany after the war where he died in 1961.
