The actor Attila Hörbiger learnt the acting at the acting school
in Berlin.
He made his theater debut at the age of 23 at the Wiener Neustadt where
he appeared in an operetta in 1919.
The theater was the great passion in Attila Hörbiger's life and
he was very successful a the Theater in der Josefstadt and later at the
Burgtheater where he was active till the old age.
Although the theater formed his personal centre he also appeared in
countless movies during the time.
He had his first film appearance in 1922 for the movie "Sodom und Gomorra",
it followed other silent movies in which he often impersonated villains
and imperious characters.
With the rise of the talkies his roles became bigger and he impersonated
important support roles and leading roles.
To his well-known movies of the 30's belong "Der unsterbliche Lump"
(30), "Das Flötenkonzert von Sanssouci" (30), "Der Tunnel" (33), "Zwischen
Himmel und Erde" (34), "Varieté" (35), "Ernte" (36), "Mädchenpensionat"
(36), "Frau im Strom" (39) and "Grenzfeuer" (39).
He was able to continue his career during wartime and acted in "Die
letzte Runde" (40), "Heimkehr" (41), "Alarmstufe V" (41), "Die kluge Marianne"
(43) and "Die goldene Fessel" (44).
He continued his theater and film career smoothly after the war. His
roles on the stages were form by his personality more than ever and he
was also convincing in movies.
To his most popular post-war movies belong "Am Ende der Welt" (47),
"Gottes Engel sind überall" (48), "Maresi" (48), "Der Engel mit der
Posaune" (48), "Das vierte Gebot" (50), "Maria Theresia" (51), "Spionage"
(55), "Der Meineidbauer" (56) and "Der Edelweisskönig" (57).
His appearances in front of the camera waned from the 60's in favour
of the theater. Except few feature movies he acted in TV productions in
the next years.
To his last movies belong "Der Unschuldige" (62), "Professor Bernhardi"
(62), "Katharina Knie" (64), "Fast ein Poet" (68), "Karl May" (74) and
"Die weisse Stadt" (80).
Attila Hörbiger was achieved with many awards during his long-standing
career, among others the Bundesverdienstkreuz of the FRG in 1954 and he
was the bearer of the Kainz-Medaille and of hte Nestroy ring.
Attila Hörbiger was married with the actress Paula
Wessely, their daughters Elisabeth Orth, Maresa Hörbiger and Christiane
Hörbiger became also actresses.
His brother Paul Hörbiger belonged
to the most popular Austrian actors.
