. The actor Paul Hubschmid belonged to the most popular Swiss actors whose career began in Switzerland at the end of the 30's and experienced the height in Germany after the war. However he didn't learnt his acting abilities in Switzerland but at the Reinhardt seminar in Vienna where he also had his first appearance on stage. It followed theater engagements in Germany before he made his film debut in Switzerland in 1938 with the movie "Füsilier Wipf". This movie made him famous overnight and he became very popular both in Switzerland and Germany. It followed a second big Swiss production with the title "Die missbrauchten Liebesbriefe" (40), after that his career took place in Germany mainly. Till the end of war he appeared in German movies like "Der Fall Rainer/Ich warte auf Dich" (42), "Meine Freundin Josefine" (42), "Liebesbriefe" (44), "Der gebieterische Ruf" (44) and "Das seltsame Fräulein Sylvia" (45). After the war followed the height of his long-standing career. Besides
other German productions like "Gottes Engel sind überall" (48), "Geheimnisvolle
Tiefe" (49) and "Palace Hotel" (52) he was also able to gain a foothold
in the USA.There he acted under the pseudonym Paul Christian in movies
like "Bagdad" (49) and "The Beast From 20'000 Fathoms" (53).
Paul Hubschmid appeared in the successful movies "Maske in Blau" (53), "Heute heiratet mein Mann" (56), "Die Zürcher Verlobung" (57), "Scampolo" (58), "Ihr 106. Geburtstag" (58) and finally Fritz Lang's late works "Der Tiger von Eschnapur" (59) and "Das indische Grabmal" (59) in the next years. Television became an important employer for Paul Hubschmid in the 60's and he took part in movies like "Die rote Hand" (60), "Heldinnen" (60), "Ich bin auch nur eine Frau" (62), "Die Lady" (64), "Heirate mich, Cherie" (64), "Der Mann mit den 1000 Masken" (66), "Playgirl" (66), Funeral in Berlin - Finale in Berlin" (66) and "Negresco - Eine tödliche Affäre" (68). To his last cinematical works belong "Eine Frau bleibt eine Frau" (73),
"Zurück an den Absender" (81), "Bolero" (85) and the serial "Forsthaus
Falkenau" (89).
Paul Hubschmid was married among others with the actress Eva Renzi.
