. The director Eugen lllés was born as Jenö Illés in Budapest. After a comprehensive education in the fields of mathematics, anstronomy, music and philosophy he began his professional career as an engineer. Beside it he began to write first works as an author. He joined the film business in 1912, first as a cinematographer and one year later as a director and screenwriter. As a cinematographer he was especially active in the 10s and he shot the movies "Der Gott der Rache" (12), "Jugendstürme" (12), "Verworrene Wege" (17), "Monna Vanna" (17), "Alraune, die Henkerstochter, genannt die rote Hanne" (18), "Ringende Seelen" (18), "Wenn Columbine winkt" (19) and "Ich klage an" (19). From 1913 he realised his first movies as a director, among them "Irrwege" (13), "Die Sphinx" (13), "Die Jagd nach einem Mann" (13), "Die Dame mit der Maske" (13), "Die Stunde der Vergeltung" (14), "Das Millionen-Halsband" (14), "Monna Vanna" (16), "Sein letzter Bericht" (17), "Ikarus" (18), "Mania" (18), "Fata Morgana" (18), "Alraune, die Henkerstochter, genannt die rote Hanne" (18), "Geflüster des Teufels" (19) and "Die Welt ohne Liebe" (19). Many of these movies were adventure and action movies which were very popular at that time. During the 10s Eugen Illés was also active in his home country Hungary as a movie director. There he realised the productions "Romlott emberek közt" (15), "Szulamit" (16), "Janos vitez" (16) and "A grofnö betöröi" (16). His last cinematical works came in the 20s into being. As a director he shot the movies "Von Stufe zu Stufe bis in den Tod" (20), "Seelen im Sturm" (20), "Moral" (20), "Der Eisenbahnkönig" (21), "Jeremias" (22), "Die Todgeweihten" (24) and "Das gefährliche Alter" (27).
