Kurt Matull

. The director and screenwriter Kurt Matull first finished an education as an artistic painter and worked in this field for few years before he wrote his first play "Frauen von heute" in 1893. After a detour to the USA where he worked for the "Evening Post" in New York he returned to Germany four years later in 1906 and became a dramatic advicser at the Berliner Theater. Besides his successful plays Kurt Matull also wrote adventure stories with the characters Nick Carter and Lord Lister for the popular dime novels. He joined the film business in the 10s and he made first experiences as a director assistant. He wrote his first screenplay in 1914 with "Das verräterische Wasserzeichen" (14), afterwards followed many other screenplays. To these works belong "Kaspar Hauser" (15), "Der Zeitungsriese" (15), "Das Stärkste ist die Liebe" (16), "Frau Lotte" (16), "Ben Kabara" (17), "Die Spur im Schnee" (17), "Suchomlinow" (18) and "Raffles" (19). Kurt Matull also realised numerous movies as a director from 1914. To his directed movies belong "Der Schienenweg unterm Ozean" (14), "Gesprengte Ketten" (15), "Kaspar Hauser" (15), "Der Intrigant" (15), "Die Seele einer Frau" (16), "Es war einst ein Prinzesschen" (16), "Die toten Augen" (17), "Suchomlinow" (18), "Falsches Geld" (18), "Hiob" (19) and "Raffles" (19). His last movie as a director was "Die Leibeigene" (20). Beside it Kurt Matull also wrote several libretti for the composer Giuseppe Becce.
