.
. The actress Berthe Ostyn was born Josefine Bertha Offermann in Aachen. She received both singing and acting lessons. When she made her film debut in “Die Nacht gehört uns” (29) on the recommendation of director Carl Froelich, she moved to Berlin to concentrate on her film career. In the early 1930s, she appeared in numerous productions, including “Der Schuss im Tonfilmatelier” (The Shot in the Sound Film Studio) (1930) – one of the first films within a film, “Der Sohn der weissen Berge” (The Son of the White Mountains) (1930), “Die blonde Nachtigall” (1930), “Jeder fragt nach Erika” (1931), “Die Pranke” (1931), and “Eine Stadt steht kopf” (1933). She appeared in front of the camera for the last time in “Es tut sich was um Mitternacht” (1934), after which she retired from the film business. Berthe Ostyn was married to Eugen Ottow from 1925 to 1931, and from 1935 to Eugen Schultz, the press officer at Emelka. As Eugen Schultz was considered half-Jewish, he and Berthe Ostyn emigrated to London. In 1939, they obtained British citizenship and took the surname Shaw. In the early 1950s, the family moved to Southern Rhodesia, where Berthe Ostyn lived until the 1970s, when she separated from Eugen Shaw. She then moved to Australia, where she died in 1992.
