Franz Planer

. The cinematographer Franz Planer got an education as a photographer in Vienna and he worked in this profession from 1910. At the same time he already filmed first reports for the newsreels as a cinematographer which were shown in numerous cinemas. He realised his first feature movie as a cinematographer in 1919 with "Gewitter im Mai" (19) and Franz Planer became a busy cinematographer in the next years. He shot numerous well-known movies during the 20s, among them "Der Klosterjäger" (20), "Der Favorit der Königin" (22), "Sodom und Gomorrha" (22), "Monna Vanna" (22), "Die Finanzen des Grossherzogs" (24), "Gehetzte Menschen" (24), "Der Sohn des Hannibal" (26), "Die Ausgestossenen" (27), "Alraune" (28), "Die Rothausgasse" (28), "Wolga Wolga" (28) and "Frauen am Abgrund" (29). His greatest successes for the German film came in the sound film era of the 30s into being. To these works belong "Stud. Chem. Helene Willfüer" (30), "Die Drei von der Tankstelle" (30), "Hans in allen Gassen" (30), "Die Gräfin von Monte-Christo" (32), "Der schwarze Husar" (32), "Eine Stadt steht kopf" (33) and "Leise flehen meine Lieder" (33). With the rise of the National Socialsm he returned to his home country Austria where he had no problems to continue his film career. Till 1937 he realised the movies "Maskerade" (34), "Premiere" (36), "Die ganz grossen Torheiten" (37) and "Kapriolen" (37). At the same time he already worked for first productions abroad, among them the French movies "La garnison amoureuse" (34), "Dactylo se marie" (34) and "Tarass Boulba" (36) as well as the British movies "Turn of the Tide" (35) and "The Dictator" (35). Franz Planer left Europe in 1937 and went to the USA where he was engaged by Columbia till 1945. To his movies of those years belong "Holiday" (38), "The Rebel Son" (38), "Escape to Glory" (40), "The Face Behind the Mask" (41), "Our Wife" (41), "Sabotage Squad" (42), "Appointment in Berlin" (43), "Once Upon a Time" (44) and "Secret Command" (44). After his time by Columbia he went on with his film career successfully and he shot "Her Sister's Secret" (46), "The Chase" (46), "Letter from an Unknown Woman" (48), "Champion" (49) and "Once More, My Darling" (49). For "Champion" he got his first Oscar nomination. His most popular US movies came in the 50s into being. To these works belong "Cyrano de Bergerac" (50), "The Blue Veil" (51), "Death of a Salesman" (51), "Decision Before Dawn" (51), "Roman Holiday" (53), "The Caine Mutiny" (54), "20'000 Leagues Under the Sea" (54), "The Left Hand of God" (55), "The Big Country" (58) and "The Nun's Story" (59). During this time he got three more Oscar nominations. His last cinematical works came at the beginning of the 60s into being and Franz Planer took part again in some very popular movies. These movies comprise "The Unforgiven" (60), "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (61), "King of Kings" (61), "The Children's Hour" (61) and "Something's Got to Give" (62). For "The Children's Hour" he got his last Oscar nomination. But the Oscar was never awarded to him. Franz Planer died at the of only 58 in January 1963.
