The screenwriter Walter Reisch made first experiences in the film business
as an assistant of Alexander Korda and he wrote his first scripts for the
Austrian film in the silent movie era.
To his first movies belong "Miss Hobbs" (21),"Oberst Redl" (25), "Der
Fluch" (25), "Ein Walzer von Strauss" (25), "Tingel Tangel" (27), "Der
Bettelstudent" (27) and "Die Nacht gehört uns" (29).
He worked in Germany at the beginning of the 30's and committed some
milestones of the German film history to paper, especially in the musical
field. In this time he often worked together with director Geza von Bolvary
and actor Willi Forst.
To his well-known works of those years belong "Hokuspokus" (30), "Das
Lied ist aus" (30), "Das Flötenkonzert von Sans-souci" (30), "Der
Raub der Mona Lisa" (31), "Ein blonder Traum" (32), "Die Gräfin von
Monte-Christo" (32), "F.P.1 antwortet nicht" (32) and "Saison in Kairo"
(33).
But when the National Socialists came into power in Germany the Jew
Walter Reisch returned to Austria and continued his career in his home
country. Especially his cooperation with the actor and director Willi Forst
turned out to be very fruitful, they made the movies "Leise flehen meine
Lieder" (33) und "Maskerade" (34), beside it he also directed his first
movies "Episode" (35) and "Silhouetten" (36).
In 1936 he went to England where he wrote and directed the movie "Men
Are Not Gods" (37), finally he migrated to Hollywood in 1937 with a cotract
for M-G-M. There he was able to write again multitude well-known movies,
among others for Billy Wilder, and was very successful.
Popular movies like "Ninotchka" (39) with Greta Garbo, "Comrade X"
(40) with Hedy Lamarr, "That Hamilton Woman" (41) with Vivien Leigh, "Gaslight"
(44) with Ingrid Bergmann, "Song of Scheherazade" (47) with Yvonne de Carlo
and "Niagara" (53) with Marilyn Monroe came into being.
Walter Reisch was awarded with an Oscar for his movie "Titanic" in 1953,
moreover he also was nominated for three more Oscars.
In 1955 he became presiding judge of the Academy committee for the
category "Best Foreign Language Film".
Walter Reisch came back to Germany in the 50's for a short time and
wrote the movies "Die Mücke" (54) and "Der Cornet - Die Weise von
Liebe und Tod" (55), after that he returned to the USA where he was active
as a screen writer till 1959.
To his last movies belong "Teenage Rebel" (56) with Ginger Rogers and
"Journey to the Center of the Earth" (59) with James Mason.
Walter Reisch was among others married with the ballerina Elisabeth
Handl.
