Fritz Rotter

. The screenwriter, lyricist and filmcomposer Fritz Rotter began his career in 1917 as writer of texts for several cabarets in Vienna like the Simplicissimus and for chansons. When he went to Berlin he experienced the height of his career in the 20s and 30s. He worked together with well-known composers like Ralph Benatzky and Robert Stolz, he wrote lyrics for hit songs and wrote filmcompositions. He wrote his first filmmusic for "Grossstadtschmetterling" (29) and "Wenn der weisse Flieder wieder blüht" (29), he composed filmsongs for the production "Melodie des Herzens" (29). He took part in other cinematical projects from the 30s to the 60s. He composed the score for the movies "Liebe, Scherz und Ernst" (32), "Katharina die Letzte" (36), "Ich und meine Frau" (53), "Die Schatten werden länger" (61) and "Der Lügner" (61). His lyrics of popular filmsongs adorned productions like "Alraune" (30), "Liebe im Ring" (30), "Wer nimmt die Liebe ernst?" (31), "Nachts auf den Strassen" (52) and "Illusion in Moll" (52). To his most popular hit song texts belong "Veronika, der Lenz ist da", "Wenn der weisse Flieder wieder blüht", "Ich küsse ihre Hand, Madame" and "Du passt so gut zu mir wie Zucker zum Kaffee". He was also regular active as a screenwriter and he wrote the scripts for "Die wunderbare Lüge der Nina Petrowna" (29), "Wenn der weisse Flieder wieder blüht" (29), "Liebe im Ring" (30), "Moderne Mitgift" (32), "Strich durch die Rechnung" (32), "Madame wünscht keine Kinder" (33), "Strange Illusion" (45),"September Affair" (50), "Nachts auf den Strassen" (52), "Illusion in Moll" (52), "Ich und meine Frau" (53), "Die Halbzarte" (59) and "Briefe nach Luzern" (66). The career of Fritz Rotter was interrupted in Germany by the raise of the National Socialists. As a Jew he fled to Austria, in 1936 he went to England and one year later he emigrated to the USA where he wrote some screenplays too. During his career Fritz Rotter wrote about 1200 lyrics for songs. He spent his evening of life in Switzerland.
