. The cinematographer Fritz Arno Wagner belonged to the most important cinematographers of the German silent film. He made an education at the Academy of Beaux Arts in Paris and in 1912 he joined Pathé in Paris as a clerk. He already made first cinematical experiences as a cinematographer for documentaries and newscasts - among others also about the Mexican Revolution. Moreover he also was active as a war correspondent during World War I. He was able to enter the film business in 1919, first as a cinematographer assistant for "Madame DuBarry" (19). In the same years he became a chef cinematogrpaher for the movies "Vendetta" (19) and "Der Galeerensträfling" (19). Fritz Arno Wagner transferred impressive pictures to the big screen for numerous important film productions of the 20s. To his well-known works of those years belong "Schloss Vogelöd" (21), "Der müde Tod" (21), "Nosferatu" (22), "Der brennende Acker" (22), "Schatten" (23), "Zur Chronik von Grieshuus" (25), "Pietro der Korsar" (25), "Eine Dubarry von heute "(27), "Am Rande der Welt" (27), "Die Liebe der Jeanne Ney" (27), "Spione" (28), "Waterloo" (29), "Tagebuch einer Verlorenen" (29) and "Napoleon auf St. Helena" (29). He underscored his leading role of the past years impressively in the sound film era of the 30s and he took part again in some important film productions. To these works belong "Westfront 1918" (30), "Dolly macht Karrierre" (30), "Die 3-Groschen-Oper" (31), "M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder" (31), "Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse" (33), "Ein Mann will nach Deutschland" (34), "Liebe, Tod und Teufel" (34), "Amphitryon" (35), "Unter heissem Himmel" (36), "Der Mann, der Sherlock Holmes war" (37), "Tango Notturno" (37) and "Das Mädchen mit dem guten Ruf" (38). He continued his film career during World War II with "Robert Koch, der Bekämpfer des Todes" (39), "Der Fuchs von Glenarvon" (40), "Friedrich Schiller" (40), "Ohm Krüger" (41), "Der Fall Rainer" (42), "Altes Herz wird wieder jung" (43) and "Herr Sanders lebt gefährlich" (44). After the war he first realised some documentaries as a cinematographer before he returned to the cinema for the DEFA. Fritz Arno Wagner remained professional active till to his death and in the following years he realised the movies "Mädchen hinter Gittern" (48), "Die Brücke" (49), "Frauenarzt Dr. Prätorius" (50), "Die Schuld des Dr. Homma" (51), "Torreani" (51), "1. April 2000" (52), "Die tolle Lola" (54), "Hotel Adlon" (55), "Hochzeit auf Immenhof" (56) and "Wehe, wenn sie losgelassen" (58). During the shooting for his last movie "Wehe, wenn sie losgelassen" (58) Fritz Arno Wagner fell from a dolly in such an unfortunate way that he died from the fall.
