Willi Wolff

. The director, screenwriter and producer Willi Wolff studied medicine and philosophy. Afterwards he was busy as a dentist in Berlin. He demonstrated first artistic ambitions when he wrote several chansons for different revues. He joined the film business in 1917, first as a title writer. Already one year later Willy Wolff became a demanded screenwriter, among other for "Der Stolz der Familie" (18), "De Profundis" (19), "Der rote Henker" (20), "Brigantenliebe" (20), "Die Fürstin Woronzeff" (20), "Napoleon und die kleine Wäscherin" (20), "Fahrendes Volk" (21), "Das Rätsel der Sphinx" (21), "Hans im Glück" (21), "Der Flug um den Erdball" (25), "Wie einst im Mai" (26), "Der Juxbaron" (27) and "Moral" (28). He wrote his last screenplays at the beginning of the 30s for "Die Frau ohne Nerven" (30), "Die Marquise von Pompadour" (31) and "Das Geheimnis um Johann Orth" (32). Willi Wolff realised his first movie as a director in 1919, often based on his own screenplays. To his well-known silent movies as a director belong "Brigantenliebe" (19), "Die Abenteuererin von Monte Carlo" (21), "Lola Montez, die Tänzerin des Königs" (22), "Die grosse Unbekannte" (24), "Schatten der Weltstadt" (25), "Der Juxbaron" (27), "Die schönsten Beine von Berlin" (27), "Die Dame mit dem Tigerfell" (27) and "Moral" (28). He continued his film career as a director at the beginning of the sound film era with "Die Frau ohne Nerven" (30), "Die Marquise von Pompadour" (31), "Strafsache von Geldern" (32) and "Manolescu, der Fürst der Diebe" (33). Willi Wolff was married with the actress Ellen Richter with whom he shot numerous movies. Because his wife was a jew she was no longer able to work from 1933. The couple emigrated via Vienna to France where Willi Wolff worked again as a dentist. When France was occupied by Germany they fled to the USA in 1940. There he did not continue his film career.
