The actress Ethel Clayton belonged to the pioneers of the American film and her first appearance in front of the camera can be backdated till 1909 where she acted in "Justified" (09), "Gratitude" (09), "The Brothers" (09) and "The Twelfth Juror" (09).

In the 10's followed the most intensive time in the film business and she impersonated normally suffering women in movies like "For the Love of a Girl" (12), "The Last Rose of Summer" (12), "Friend John" (13), "Mary's Temptation" (13), "The Lion and the Mouse" (14), "The Gamblers" (14), "The Wolf" (14), "It All Depends" (15), "The Blessed Miracle" (15), "In the Dark" (15), "The Deception" (15), "A Woman's Way" (16), "Beyond the Wall" (16), "The Web of Desire" (17), "Easy Money" (17), "The Mystery Girl" (18), "The Woman Next Door" (19) and "A Sporting Chance" (19).

From the 20's she often was engaged for support roles which didn't always meet her acting ability.
To her well-known movies of that time belong "The Thirteenth Commandment" (20), "Young Mrs. Winthrop" (20), "The Sins of Rosanne" (20), "The Cradle" (22), "Wings of Youth" (25), "Risky Busines" (26) and "The Princess on Broadway" (27).

Afterwards Ethel Clayton retired from the film business.
Ethel Clayton was married with the actor and director Joseph Kaufman and after his death with the actor Ian Keith.
