In den 30er Jahren wurde Richard Day förmlich mit Aufträgen überhäuft und er kreierte grossartige Kulissen für viele namhafte Produktionen, sowohl für Samuel Goldwyn und in späteren Jahren auch für MGM, 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros. und Columbia .
Zu seinen Arbeiten in den 30er Jahren gehören "One Heavenly Night" (31), "Indiscreet" (31), "Secretes" (33), "Roman Scandals" (33), "Moulin Rouge" (34), "Nana" (34), "Cardinal Richelieu" (35), "Les Misérables" (35), "The Dark Angel" (35) - wofür er seinen ersten Oscar erhielt, "Dodsworth" (36) - seine zweite Oscarauzeichnung, "Stella Dallas" (37), "Dead End" (37), "The Adventures of Marco Polo" (38), "Charlie Chan in Honolulu" (38), "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (39), "The Story of Alexander Graham Bell" (39), "Mr. Moto in Danger Island" (39), "Young Mr. Lincoln" (39) mit Henry Fonda, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (39), "The Escape" (39) und "Charlie Chan in City in Darkness" (39).

In den 40er Jahren blieben seine Engagements in grossen Hollywoodproduktionen ungebrochen vielzählig und Richard Day erlebte den Höhepunkt seiner Karriere.
Zu seinen zahlreichen Filmen dieser Jahre gehören "The Grapes of Wrath" (40), "Star Dust" (40), "Lillian Russell" (40), "The Return of Frank James" (40), "Charlie Chan at the Wax Museum" (40), "The Mark of Zorro" (40), "Western Union" (40), "That Night in Rio" (41), "Dressed to Kill" (41), "How Green Was my Valley" (41) - sein dritter Oscar, "Roxie Hart" (42), "Tales of Manhattan" (42), "Berlin Correspondent" (42), "This Above All" (42) - wofür er einen weiteren Oscar gewann, "My Gal Sal" (42) - gleichzeitig der fünfte Oscar für seine Sammlung, "The Meanest Man in the World" (43), "Boomerang!" (47), "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" (47) und "Joan of Arc" (48).

Ab den 50er Jahren trat Richard Day kürzer und entwarf nur noch für wenige Produktionen die Filmausstattung. Dazu gehören so populäre Produktionen wie "A Streetcar Named Desire" (51) - die ihm erneut einen Oscar einbrachte, "Hans Christian Andersen" (52), "On the Waterfront" (54) - wofür er seinen letzten Oscar gewann, "Solomon and Sheba" (59), "Exodus" (60), "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (65), "Valley of the Dolls" (67) und schliesslich "Tora! Tora! Tora!" (70) - seiner letzten filmischen Arbeit.

Richard Day wurde in seiner langjährigen Laufbahn 40 Mal für einen Oscar nominiert und erhielt diesen sieben Mal zugesprochen.

Neben seiner Aktivität als Filmausstatter zeichnete Richard Day auch etliche Lithographien, die als professionelle Drucke vertrieben wurden. Diese Tätigkeit gab er im Laufe der 30er Jahre auf, da er sich vollumfänglich der Filmarbeit widmete.
