1896 - 1972

The production designer Richard Day began his exceptional film career as a set designer for the legendary director Erich von Stroheim in 1918.
Erich von Stroheim was so impressed by Richard Day's work that he engaged him for many other productions as a production designer

To Richard Day's work in the silent movie era belong "Merry-Go-Round" (23), "Greed" (24), "His Secretary" (25), "Adam and Evil" (27), "The Road to Romance" (27) and "The Wedding March" (28).

Richard Day became literally swamped with commissions and he created marvelous sets for many well-known productios for Samuel Goldwyn as well as in later years for MGM, 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros. and Columbia .
To his works in the 30's belong "One Heavenly Night" (31), "Indiscreet" (31), "Secretes" (33), "Roman Scandals" (33), "Moulin Rouge" (34), "Nana" (34), "Cardinal Richelieu" (35), "Les Misérables" (35), "The Dark Angel" (35) - for which he was awarded with his first Oscar, "Dodsworth" (36) - his second Oscar, "Stella Dallas" (37), "Dead End" (37), "The Adventures of Marco Polo" (38), "Charlie Chan in Honolulu" (38), "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (39), "The Story of Alexander Graham Bell" (39), "Mr. Moto in Danger Island" (39), "Young Mr. Lincoln" (39) with Henry Fonda, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (39), "The Escape" (39) and "Charlie Chan in City in Darkness" (39).

His engagements for great Hollywood productions remained on a very high level in the 40's and Richard Day experienced the height of his career.
To his countles movies of those years belong "The Grapes of Wrath" (40), "Star Dust" (40), "Lillian Russell" (40), "The Return of Frank James" (40), "Charlie Chan at the Wax Museum" (40), "The Mark of Zorro" (40), "Western Union" (40), "That Night in Rio" (41), "Dressed to Kill" (41), "How Green Was my Valley" (41) - his third Oscar, "Roxie Hart" (42), "Tales of Manhattan" (42), "Berlin Correspondent" (42), "This Above All" (42) - for which he won an other Oscar, "My Gal Sal" (42) - at the same time the fifth Oscar for his collection, "The Meanest Man in the World" (43), "Boomerang!" (47), "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" (47) and "Joan of Arc" (48).

Richard Day reduced his engagements in the 50's and created the sets for only few more productions. To these productions belong so well-known movies like "A Streetcar Named Desire" (51) - for which he won an Oscar again, "Hans Christian Andersen" (52), "On the Waterfront" (54) - for this movie he won his last Oscar, "Solomon and Sheba" (59), "Exodus" (60), "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (65), "Valley of the Dolls" (67) and finally "Tora! Tora! Tora!" (70) - his last cinematical work.

Richard Day was nominated for 40 Oscar and won it seven times during his long-standing career.

Besides his activity as a production designer he also drew lithograpies which were distributed as professional prints. He gave up this kind of art during the 30's because he devoted exclusively to his film work.
