1900 - 1993

Seine Ausbildung zum Schauspieler erhielt er beim grossen Max Reinhardt, sein erster Filmauftritt geht auf das Jahr 1917 zurück, wo er im Film "Der Golem und die Tänzerin" mitspielte. Es folgten noch die deutschen Stummfilme "Dämon der Welt" (19), "Christian Wahnschaffe: Weltbrand" (20) und der Klassiker "Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam" (20), bevor er mit dem Stück "The Miracle" in der USA eine Theatertournee unternahm. Nach Beendigung der Tour 1923 blieb er in den Staaten.

Dort spielte er vorerst Theater, konnte aber ab 1928 auch regelmässige Beschäftigung beim Film finden, wobei der kleinwüchsige Darsteller mit seinem gewellten Haar und seinem akribisch gepflegten Schnauz meist für komische Rollen eingesetzt wurde.

Zu seinen Stummfilmen der 20er Jahre gehören u.a. "A Ship Comes In" (28), "Blindfold" (28), "The Last Command" (28) und "Black Magic" (29).

Mit dem Tonfilm nahmen die Filmangebote zu. Anfangs konzentrierte er sich zwar auf das Theater, doch ab 1937 wurde er ein regelmässiger Gast beim Film. Er agierte meist in Nebenrollen, doch seine eindrückliche Persönlichkeit mit den stechenden Augen und dem selbstbewussten Auftreten hinterliess stets einen bleibenden Eindruck beim Publikum.

Zu den bekanntesten Filmen der 30er Jahren gehören "True Confession" (37), "Bringing Up Baby" (38), "Romance in the Dark" (38), "I'll Give a Million" (38) und "The Marx Brothers at the Circus" (39).

Die 40er Jahre waren die arbeitsintensivste Zeit beim Film. Er agierte in über 45 Filmen, darunter "Millionaire Playboy" (40), "Victory" (40), "Shut My Big Mout" (42), "Sleepytime Gal" (42), "Phantom of the Opera" (43), "Passport to Destiny" (44), "The Catman of Paris" (46), "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (47), "Trouble Makers" (48) und "The Loveable Cheat" (49).

Er konnte sich nicht über mangelnde Arbeit beklagen und war bis Ende der 80er Jahre regelmässig als Schauspieler aktiv, so in "Little Egypt" (51), "Sky High" (52), "So You Want to Be Pretty" (56), "Pocketful of Miracles" (61), "The Errand Boy" (61), "Three on a Couch" (66), "Barefoot in the Park" (67), "The Comic" (69), "The Sunshine Boys" (75), "The Strongest Man in the World" (75), "Silent Movie" (76), "The World's Greatest Lover" (77), "Herbie Goes Bananas" (80) und "Barfly" (87).

Mit dem Schauspieler Joseph Schildkraut gründete er das Hollywood Playhouse Theater. Er war verheiratet mit der Schauspielerin Virginia Christine.
