Der Schauspieler J. Barney Sherry gehörte zu den Pionieren des
amerikanischen Films und er avancierte zunächst unter dem Künstlernamen
James B. Reeves und später als J. Barney Sherry zu einem der ersten
Stars des amerikanischen Films.
Begonnen hatte er seine Laufbahn
jedoch beim Theater, wo er sein Bühnendebüt im Stück "Jack and the
Beanstalk" feierte, wo er die Rolle des Riesen verkörperte.
Sein ersten Filme entstanden bereits 1905 mit "Raffles, the Amateur Cracksman" (05) und "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (05).
Ab 1909 entstanden dann eine Vielzahl an Filmen, in denen er unterschiedlichste Rollen spielte.
Zu
seinen bekanntesten Arbeiten dieser Jahre gehören "The Mexican's Crime"
(09), "A Romance of the Prairie" (10), "The Man from Texas" (10), "Lost
for Many Years" (10), "The Sea Wolves" (10), "The Totem Mark" (11),
"Evangeline" (11), "The Colonel's Peril" (12), "A White Lie" (12), "A
Shadow of the Past" (13), "The Counterfeiter" (13), "The Banshee" (13),
"Devition" (13), "The Soul of the South" (13), "The Mills of the Gods"
(14), "The Devil" (15) und "The Valley of Hate" (15).
Auch in
der 2. Hälfte der 10er Jahre blieben seine Auftritte vor der Kamera
umfangreich und er agierte in den Produktionen "The Raiders" (16), "The
Aryan" (16), "The Phantom" (16), "The Snarl" (17), "Ten of Diamonds"
(17), "Fanatics" (17), "Who Killed Walton?" (18), "The Reckoning Day"
(18), "Mary Regan" (19), Yvonne from Paris" (19) und "The Tiger Lily"
(19).
Seine eindrückliche Filmlaufbahn blieb auf die Stummfilmzeit begrenzt.
So entstanden seine letzten filmischen Arbeiten in den 20er Jahren, wo er erneut viele Engagements erhielt.
Zu
diesen Arbeiten zählen "The Breath of the Gods" (20), "The Barbarian"
(21), "Shadows of the Sea" (22), "Secrets of Paris" (22), "Till We Meet
Again" (22), "Dixie" (24), "Born Rich" (24), "Lying Wives" (25), "False
Pride" (25), "The Brown Derby" (26), "Spider Webs" (27), "Alex the
Great" (28) und "In Old Madrid" (29).
J. Barney Sherry blieb beim Theater auch in späteren Jahren treu und er agierte regelmässig am Playhouse in Philadelphia.
