Der Kameramann
Archie Stout war zunächst als Waldhüter tätig, ehe er sich
entschied, bei Keystone den Beruf eines Kameramannes zu erlernen.
Dort lernte er alle Tricks und Finessen kennen und schliesslich arbeitete
er ab den 20er Jahren erstmals mit anderen Kameramännern an Filmen,
darunter "His Nibs" (21), "The Drivin' Fool" (23), Cecil B. DeMilles "The
Ten Commandments" (23) und "Varsity" (28).
In den 30er Jahren etablierte er sich endgültig als Kameramann
und er realisierte unzählige Filme, oftmals für das Western-Genre.
Zu seinen bekanntesten Filmen der 30er Jahre gehören "The Return
of Dr. Fu Manchu" (30), "The Sea God" (30), "Sunrise Trail" (31), "Ships
of Hate" (31), "Law of the Sea" (31), "Vanishing Men" (32), "Flames" (32),
"The Man from Arizona" (32), "The Fugitive" (33), "The Man from Utah" (34),
"The Stark Packer" (34), "Nevada" (35), "Conflict" (36), "The Adventures
of Marco Polo" (38) und "Beau Geste" (39).
In den kommenden Jahren nahmen seine Engagements als Kameramann ab,
dennoch übte er den Beruf bis Mitte der 50er Jahre aus.
Zu seinen letzten Filmen gehören "It Happened Tomorrow" (44),
"Alaska" (44), "Captain Kidd" (45), "Fort Apache" (48), "Outrage" (50),
"Trouble Along the Way" (53) und "The High and the Mighty" (54).
Für seine Arbeit an "The Quiet Man" (52) wurde er mit einem Oscar
ausgezeichnet.
1955 erlitt Archie Stout einen Herzinfarkt, der ihn dazu zwang, vom
Filmgeschäft zurückzutreten.
