The cinematographer Archie
Stout was first busy as a ranger before he decied to learn the profession
of a cameraman at Keystone.
There he learned all tricks and finesses and in the 20's he worked
together with other cameramen for movies like "His Nibs" (21), "The Drivin'
Fool" (23), Cecil B. DeMille's "The Ten Commandments" (23) and "Varsity"
(28).
He became established as a cinematographer in the 30's and he realised
numerous movies, often Western.
To his well-known productions of the 30's belong "The Return of Dr.
Fu Manchu" (30), "The Sea God" (30), "Sunrise Trail" (31), "Ships of Hate"
(31), "Law of the Sea" (31), "Vanishing Men" (32), "Flames" (32), "The
Man from Arizona" (32), "The Fugitive" (33), "The Man from Utah" (34),
"The Stark Packer" (34), "Nevada" (35), "Conflict" (36), "The Adventures
of Marco Polo" (38) and "Beau Geste" (39).
His engagements as a cameraman diminished in the next years but he continued
his career till to the middle of the 50's.
To his last movies belong "It Happened Tomorrow" (44), "Alaska" (44),
"Captain Kidd" (45), "Fort Apache" (48), "Outrage" (50), "Trouble Along
the Way" (53) and "The High and the Mighty" (54).
For his work for "The Quiet Man" (52) he was awarded with an Oscar.
Archie Stout suffered a heart attack in 1955 which forced him to retire
from the film business.
