The director Jacques Deray soon followed a career in the film business and he studied drama and gathered first experiences as an actor in movies and on stage. But he soon realized that his calling was behind the camera and he directed first movies.
In the first place he worked as an assistant for well-known directors like Jules Dassin and Luis Bunuel. He made his direction debut with "Le gigolo" (60) and in the next years he became established as a successful director of fast thrillers with fascinating stories.
After the movies "Du rififi à Tokyo" (62) and "Avec la peau des autres" (66) he realised his first box-office hit with "La piscine - Der Swimmingpool" (69). Alain Delon impersonated the leading roles and they worked together for a total of eight movies. Another favoured actor of Deray was Jean-Paul Belmondo.
Jacques Deray experienced the height of his career in the 70's and 80's. He directed among others the productions "Borsalino" (70), "Un homme est mort" (72), "Flic Story" (75), "Trois hommes à abattre" (80), "Le marginal" (83) and "Le solitaire" (87).
To his last works belong "Un crime" (93), "L'ours en peluche" (94), "Clarissa" (98) and "Lettre d'une inconnue - Brief einer Unbekannten" (01).
